RefWorks Roundup

During this week’s Introduction to RefWorks training course we were asked if it’s possible to create a backup copy of your database. The answer is yes! Here’s how:

• Log-in to RefWorks
• Select Tools on the top toolbar followed by Backup/Restore
• By default, Include References is selected. If you don’t want to include your references, deselect this option.
• By default, Include RSS Feeds is selected. If you don’t want to include your RSS Feeds, deselect this option.
• By default, all custom Output Styles are selected. You can deselect any or all custom output styles.
• Click on Perform Backup.
• Save the file (leaving the file extension as it is).

To restore your backup copy:

• Select Tools on the top toolbar followed by Backup/Restore.
• Select the Restore radio button.
• Browse for your backup file.
• Select Include References, Include Output Styles and Include RSS Feeds as necessary.
• Click on Perform Restore.

Please note that restoring a backup copy will overwrite any references that you have in your database and overwrite any output styles that share the same names.

For in-depth searches it’s usually better to search databases individually but if you are using QSearch for cross-searching a number of databases, you can export references from QSearch into RefWorks. If you need to export references from QCat then search QCat from within QSearch.

To export references from QSearch into RefWorks:

• Conduct your search and save the references you want by clicking on the basket icon.
• Click on My QSearch on the top toolbar and select the references for export to RefWorks.
• Click on Selected then click on Save.
• In Record format, choose Citation Manager and click on Save.
• Save the file.
• Log-in to RefWorks.
• Select References on the top toolbar followed by Import.
• Select Queen’s University Belfast as the import filter and QSearch as the database.
• Browse to find the file you saved and click on Import.
• Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

RefGrab-It is a plug-in which works with your browser to capture information from a webpage in a form compatible with RefWorks, allowing the data to be imported just like a citation from a database. RefGrab-It also searches the web for further details related to the webpage, using International Standard Book Numbers or Digital Object Identifiers to locate as much additional bibliographic information as possible.

RefGrab-It is available for Internet Explorer and Firefox on Windows, and Firefox and Netscape on Macs. To download it, login to your RefWorks account, select ‘Tools’ then ‘RefGrab-It’ and follow the on-screen instructions.
